Biography* | When this article was originally written, it was presumed that this John J. Culpepper was the son of John Jefferson Culpepper and Catherine Bell. DNA evidence from two descendants has now proven that John J. was not the son of John Jefferson Culpepper. However, he might have been the son of Catherine Bell by a prior marriage. Further research is needed. In any case, it is clear that John J. was raised as a Culpepper, and that he probably never knew anything otherwise. No record of John J. Culpepper's middle name has yet been found but it was probably James since John J. Culpepper's younger brother, Robert Jefferson Culpepper, named his first son John James Culpepper. John J. Culpepper in turn named one of his sons Robert Jefferson Culpepper. John J. Culpepper was probably NOT named John Jefferson after his father since his father named another son Robert Jefferson. It has been necessary to reconstruct a record of John J. Culpepper and a younger sister and their descendants from census and marriage records since knowledge of their existence was lost by descendants of the two younger brothers. Louis Alford Culpepper, a grandson of John Jefferson and Catherine (Bell) Culpepper and a nephew of John J. Culpepper, wrote to his own grandson, R. A. Morgan, 11 Oct 1942: "My father William Washington Culpepper... had one brother older Jeff Culpepper...." It is difficult to work with U. S. Census records before 1850 because only the head-of-household was listed by name and other family members were noted only by sex and approximate age; but, based on 1830, 1840 and 1850 census records, there appears to have been an older brother and a sister that William Washington Culpepper had not mentioned to Louis. Unfortunately, John Jefferson and Catherine (Bell) Culpepper have not been found in the 1820 census of South Carolina or Georgia and so an important link in the chain has been lost. In the 1830 Upson Co., GA Census, a 15-20 year old male, a 10-15 year old male and a 10-15 year old female are listed in the household of John Jefferson and Catherine (Bell) Culpepper. The oldest boy was probably John Jefferson's brother, William Henry, who has not been located in the 1830 census and who married less than a year later in Upson Co., GA. This leaves the two younger children. Based on later census and marriage records, these two appear to be the oldest son and daughter of John Jefferson and Catherine (Bell) Culpepper. In the 1840 Upson Co., GA census a 20-30 year old "John J. Culpeper" was listed (p. 28 but NOT IN THE CENSUS INDEX) with his wife and a young son 0-5 years of age. This obviously was not John Jefferson Culpepper who was listed with his family in the 1840 census of Chambers Co., AL and this appears to be the same John J. Culpepper that was listed as a mechanic in the 1850 census records of Pike Co., GA In the 1840 census, John J. Culpepper was living with his family in Upson Co., GA and John Jefferson Culpepper was the only Culpepper listed in Upson Co., GA in the 1830 census. Based on the 1850 census, John J. Culpepper was born circa 1817 and this would account for the 10-15 years old male noted in the 1830 census of the John Jefferson Culpepper household. Based on census records, John J. Culpepper had six sons, four of whom were named, Lewis, John, Robert Jefferson and Joel, all names of the father, brothers, and a son of John Jefferson Culpepper. In the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records, John J. Culpepper listed his place of birth as Georgia. John Jefferson Culpepper is not believed to have moved his family to Georgia until 1823 or 1824. Unfortunately, as noted, John Jefferson Culpepper, like his father, John Culpepper, has not been found in the 1820 census records of Georgia or South Carolina. Although it is possible that John Jefferson Culpepper and his wife moved to Georgia soon after their marriage, it is not likely since, Mary Ann Elizabeth Culpepper, the next oldest child, listed her place of birth as South Carolina in the 1850 census. On the other hand, it is not unusual in census records to see people note the place of their childhood as their place of birth especially if they were separated from their families, as John J. Culpepper was since he married and stayed behind in Upson Co., GA while his parents moved on to Alabama. It is interesting to note that although John J. Culpepper appeared in 1830 and 1840 census records in Upson Co., GA, he married in Monroe Co., GA. John and Nancy (Gillespie) Culpepper were noted in the 1830 census of Monroe Co., GA and are believed to have remained there until the mid-1830's. It is possible that John J. Culpepper met his future bride while visiting with them. Or possibly the families lived near the common border of the two counties and could visit easily. Supporting this is the fact that John J. Culpepper was recorded with his young family in the 1840 census of Upson Co., GA and yet John William Culpepper, a son who was probably born in 1840 gave his place of birth as Monroe Co., GA in an 1899 Civil War pension application. Perhaps, Elizabeth went to her parent's home in Monroe Co., GA for the birth. Robert Jefferson Culpepper, specified on his Civil War pension application that he had been born in Upson Co., GA in 1843 so apparently the family was still living in the county. By 1847, the family appears to have been on the move. A son, Benjamin Franklin Culpepper, who was born that year, was listed in the 1850 census as having been born in Alabama. John J. Culpepper's parents were living in Chamber Co., AL, could he have taken his family to visit them? If so, the family did not remain in Alabama since the next child was listed as having been born in Georgia and as noted, John J. Culpepper was living in Pike Co., GA by 1850 where he was noted with his family in the census. An uncle, Lewis P. Culpepper, and a cousin, Joseph R. Culpepper, were also noted living in Pike Co., GA in 1850. Presumably John J. Culpepper had been farming in Upson Co., GA but now he was listed as a mechanic. Similarly, Lewis P. Culpepper was listed as a millwright and Joseph R. Culpepper was listed as a laborer in the 1850 census so members of the family appear to have been in the process of moving away from farming as a way of life. John J. Culpepper was once thought to have died in late 1859 or early 1860 since his wife, Elizabeth, was listed as a head of household in the 1860 census. She was living in Monroe Co., GA. Her father died in 1859, and she seems to have inherited a considerable estate in Monroe County, worth about $10,000, which was a large sum of money in those days (as recorded on the 1860 census). However, it would now appear that the couple had simply split up; no details are currently known. Elizabeth went to Monroe Co. GA to live near her family, and her husband John J. went to Jackson County, FL. He appears in the 1860 census there, as "J. J. Culpepper, age 40." His son John William was listed with him as "J. W., age 19." His occupation was first listed as "mechanic" as in 1850, but then that was crossed out, and "carpenter" was written in above. John William was also listed in 1860 Monroe Co. GA with his mother Elizabeth, so he seems to have been recorded twice in 1860. In 1863 John J. remarried, and had additional children by his second wife, Zilpha McDaniel. He is listed in the 1870 census in Jackson Co. FL as a carpenter, once again, and is presumed to have died there sometime before 1880, as he does not appear on that census.15,16 |

Biography* | In a Civil War pension application, Lewis L. Culpepper noted that he had been a resident of Georgia since 25 Jul 1838, presumably when he was born. His father, John J. Culpepper, was noted in Upson Co., GA in 1830 and 1840 census records so even though Lewis' parents married in Monroe Co., GA, where Elizabeth Stallings' parents lived, they are believed to have been living in Upson Co., GA when Lewis was born. However, a younger brother, John William Culpepper, states in a Civil War pension application that he was born in Monroe Co., GA so it is possible that Elizabeth had her first children at her parents' home in Monroe Co., GA. Lewis is first noted in 1840 census records as a male age 0-5 in the household of his father, John J. Culpepper. Lewis' parents had moved to Pike Co., GA by 1850 and Lewis is noted in the 1850 census living with his parents. By 1860, the family had moved to Monroe Co., GA possibly to be with Elizabeth (Stallings) Culpepper's mother because Lewis' grandfather, William Stallings had died. Or possibly they had returned because John J. Culpepper had died since he was not recorded with his family in the 1860 census. Shortly after this, Lewis married, presumably in Monroe Co., GA. According to Appendix D-1 of Monroe County, Georgia: A History published in 1979 by the Monroe County Historical Society, Inc. of Forsyth, GA, when the Civil War broke out, "Lewis L. Culpepper" enlisted with his younger brothers, Robert J. Culpepper and John William Culpepper, in the "Rutland Volunteers" Company B of the 45th Georgia Infantry of the Confederate Army. He was wounded at Gettysburg, PA and at Jerico Ford, VA and was a Prisoner of War at Lookout, MD. According to p. 188 of Georgia Confederate Soldier Obituaries Henry, Newton and Rockdale Counties - 1879 - 1943 compiled by Rhoda Ann Bowen, Freda R. Turner, Editor and published by W H Wolfe Associates of Alpharetta, GA 30201: CULPEPPER, Lewis L. Pvt. Co. B 45th Ga. Thomas' Brigade. Henry County Weekly reveals an obituary on 1/26/1917 edition and wife is listed as [Mrs.] L. L. Culpepper. According to Muster Roll slips in his Civil War file, "Lewis L. Culpepper" enlisted with Capt. Dozier as a Private in Co. B Georgia Infantry (Confederate) at Guinea, VA 17 May 1862 for three years or the war. But probably like his younger brothers, he actually enlisted in Georgia but was enrolled in the Confederate Army in Virginia. Lewis was wounded in battle 19 May 1864 and was admitted 23 May 1864 to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, VA with "V. S. L. leg Min Ball." Presumably he had been shot in the left leg with a minnie ball. He was furloughed home 5 Jun 1864 for 30 days. He was captured "near Petersburg" 25 Mar 1865 and apparently taken to "City Point" VA and then held at Point Lookout, MD until he was released 26 Jun 1865. On the Oath of Allegiance of that date, he was listed as residing in Monroe Co., GA. He had a dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes. He was 5' 10 1/2" tall. According to an application for a Civil War pension, "Louis L. Culpepper" noted that 5 Feb 1863 (or 30 Nov 1863) he had been injured while on a forced march from Orange Court House to Mine Run over a frozen plank road. He had slipped on the ice and fell and hurt his spine causing paralysis of the spinal column, constant pain in the head and stiffness of the neck. Frequently he was in such severe pain that he could not get up without help and the disability was getting worse with age so that he was unable to perform manual labor. It is interesting to note that he continued to fight for two years after he sustained this injury. After the war, Lewis returned to Monroe Co., GA where he was noted with his wife and family in the 1870 census of Forsyth, Monroe Co., GA. His brother, Robert J. Culpepper, had been living nearby but apparently was in the process of moving to Henry Co., GA in 1870 since he was picked up census records in both locations. Lewis was noted with his wife and children in the 1880 and 1900 census records of Henry Co., GA. Sometime before 1910, Lewis moved to Griffin, Spalding Co., GA where he was noted in the 1910 census with what appears to be his second wife. In 1912, Lewis applied for a Civil War pension because he was totally blind. Sometime before his death, Lewis apparently moved to LaGrange, GA since this is where he died. The following obituary from the front page of the Henry County Weekly for Friday, 26 Jan 1917 was preserved on p. 38 of Georgia Confederate Soldier Obituaries Henry, Newton and Rockdale Counties - 1879 - 1943 compiled by Rhoda Ann Bowen, Freda R. Turner, Editor and published by W H Wolfe Associates of Alpharetta, GA 30201: MR. LEWIS CULPEPPER DIES IN LaGRANGE Mr. Lewis Culpepper, a former well known citizen of Henry County, died at his home in LaGrange on Wednesday of last week. The remains were brought here for the funeral and interment at Philadelphia Church, Rev. T. J. Bledsoe officiating. Mr. Culpepper was 78 years old, a veteran of the Civil War and for some time before death has been totally blind. He was a good, worthy citizen, and besides relatives leaves a large circle of friends in this county. Henry County, Georgia Churchyard Cemeteries, compiled by Vessie Thrasher Rainer, and published in 1980, records the following on p. 79: "Lewis L. Culpepper, Co., B. 45 Ga. Inf. C.S.A." |

Biography* | John William was known as J. William or William Culpepper. On a Civil War pension application in 1899, John William Culpepper stated that he had been born 28 Jan 1839 in Monroe Co., GA. However, his older brother, Lewis, was born in late July 1838 which would make it unlikely that John William was born in January of the following year. An 1840 birth year is supported by his stated age of 10 and 20 in 1850 and 1860 census records, however, John William was NOT noted with the family in the 1840 census of Upson Co., GA. This makes the reference to Monroe Co., GA as his place of birth interesting. Elizabeth (Stallings) Culpepper's parents were living in Monroe Co., GA. Could she have gone to her parents' house to give birth? Is it possible that someone that knew the family supplied the 1840 census information without knowing that there had been an addition to the family? In any event, John William Culpepper emerges in the 1850 census of Pike Co., GA living with his parents and he is also noted in the 1860 census of Monroe Co., GA living with his mother. "William Culpepper" is next noted in Monroe Co., GA marriage records when he married Cynthia "Thinsy" Ann Hanson in 11 Sep 1861. The couple had only a few months together. Appendix D-1 of Monroe County, Georgia: A History published in 1979 by the Monroe County Historical Society, Inc. of Forsyth, GA lists "John William Culpepper" as a member of B/45 Rutland Volunteers during the Civil War. It also notes that he was wounded at Spotsylvania, VA. Civil War records show a J. W. Culpepper who enlisted 26 Feb 1862 in "Monroe" in "Rutland Vol 45 Regt Ga Vol." This group was then apparently rolled into the larger Confederate Army since John W. Culpepper was noted on later record slips to have enlisted 4 Mar 1862 in Forsyth, GA as a private in Co. B 45th Regiment of the Georgia Infantry. According to Company Muster Roll slips John William was "employed on extra duty" with the Pioneer Corps, Wilcox Lt. Div. from 1 Jan 1864 through 9 Mar 1864. The following pay voucher was included with John William Culpepper's Civil War records: _____I Certify that the vetran(?) named J. William Culpepper a private(?) of Captain Warren Bush's Company (B) 45th Ga Regt was born in Monroe County Georgia aged 25 years 5 feet eleven inches high fair complexion blue eyes dark hair and by occupation a farmer, was enlisted at Forsyth Georgia on the 4th day of March 1862 to Serve for three years and is now entitled to his Monthly pay by reason of his having received a furlough of indulgence from the proper authority. _____The said J. Unfortunately, he and his wife have not been identified in census records in 1870, 1880 or 1900 (1890 burned). J. W. Culpepper is next noted in 1899 applying to the State of Georgia for a Civil War pension for indigent veterans: Questions for Applicant STATE OF GEORGIA,_______ Bibb____________ County. She stated that she suffered from "heart trouble" "Reheumatism" and "general debility." A physician supported the claim noting that she suffered from "chronic oispipsis(?) and nervous palpitation of the heart." |

Biography* | According to R. J. Culpepper's Civil War pension application, he was born in Upson Co., GA in 1843. [tombstone lists 1844] By 1850, Robert's parents had moved the family to Pike Co., GA where Robert J. Culpepper emerges in 1850 census records, living with his parents. By 1860, his mother had moved her family to Monroe Co., GA where Robert is noted living with his mother in the 1860 census. According to Appendix D-1 of Monroe County, Georgia: A History published in 1979 by the Monroe County Historical Society, Inc. of Forsyth, GA, when the Civil War began, "Robert Jefferson Culpepper" and his brothers, Lewis L. Culpepper and John William Culpepper, joined the "Rutland Volunteers," Company B of the 45th Georgia Infantry of the Confederate Army. Robert was listed as having been a Prisoner of War at Fort Delaware, DE. According to Muster Roll slips from Robert J. Culpepper's Civil War file, he apparently joined J. W. Dozier and the "Rutland Vol" 26 Feb 1862 in "Monroe" this group was apparently brought into the Confederate Army and later records note that he enlisted with Capt. Dozier at Forsyth, GA 4 Mar 1862 for three years or the war. Robert Jefferson Culpepper was admitted to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, VA 8 May 1864 for "V. S. face. Min. B." presumably he had been shot in the face with a minnie ball. He was listed as a Pvt. Co. B 45 Regt. Ga in "Thomas" Brigade. He was captured at Petersburg, VA 2 Apr 1865 and transferred to Fort Delaware, MD 4 Apr 1865. He was released 16 Jun 1865 and on the Oath of Allegiance he was listed as a resident of Monroe Co., GA. He had a light Complexion, light hair and hazel eyes. He was 5' 9" tall. Surviving the war, Robert Jefferson returned home and according to the widow's pension application, he married Mary Elizabeth Graham 29 Oct 1866 in Pike Co., GA. The couple then apparently lived in Monroe Co., GA near his brother Lewis, and possibly near their mother until 1870. Robert J. Culpepper was either in the process of moving to Henry Co., GA in 1870 or a census taker was padding his accounts since Robert seems to have been recorded twice with his wife and two oldest children, in the 1870 census, once as a 27 year old "Robert J. Culpepper" in Forsyth, Monroe Co., GA (p. 217) and once as a 26 year old "Bob Culpepper" a farm hand in Henry Co., GA. Robert Culpepper apparently remained in Henry Co., GA for the rest of his life and was noted there with his wife and children in 1880 and 1900 census records. And he was noted with his wife of 44 years in the 1910 census records of Henry Co., GA. Two years later Robert Jefferson Culpepper died. The following obituary is from the front page of the 26 Apr 1912 Henry County Weekly which was preserved on p. 38 of Georgia Confederate Soldier Obituaries Henry, Newton and Rockdale Counties - 1879 - 1943 compiled by Rhoda Ann Bowen and Freda R. Turner, Editor and published by W H Wolfe Associated of Alpharetta, GA 30201: MR. R. J. CULPEPPER IS CALLED BY DEATH Mr. R. J. Culpepper passed away at his home in Locust Grove District Sunday after an illness of several months. Mr. Culpepper was 69 years old and has lived practically all that time in Henry County. He was one of the county's best men and citizen and was a genial and kindly gentleman ever ready to extend a kindness and ever attracting the same to himself. The funeral and interment were at Philadelphia Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, the Rev. J. E. England officiating. He is survived by his wife, six daughters, Mrs. A. C. Sowell and Mrs. W. J. Rodgers of McDonough, Mrs. J. H. Gardner and Mrs. Lowe Price of this county, Mrs. J. F. McGarity of Cordelle and Mrs. K. F. Norman of Hazelhurst and 3 sons, Mr. Cliff Culpepper, Mr. Joe Culeppper and Mr. Marvin Culpepper. On his tombstone in the Philadelphia Methodist Churchyard Cemetery according to p. 79 of Henry County, Georgia Churchyard Cemeteries compiled by Vessie Thrasher Rainer and published in 1980 was recorded: Robert J. Culpepper Nov. 4, 1844 - April 20, 1912 Pvt. Co. B. 45 Regt. Ga. Inf. C.S.A. According to p. 118 of Georgia Confederate Soldier Obituaries Henry, Newton and Rockdale Counties - 1879 - 1943 compiled by Rhoda Ann Bowen and Freda R. Turner, Editor and published by W H Wolfe Associated of Alpharetta, GA 30201: CULPEPPER, R. J. Co. B 15th [45th per tombstone, Civil War and pension record] Ga. Born 1843 in Upson Co., Ga. according to pension records. Henry County Mother of Counties by V. T. Rainer (Alexander Mem. Library, McDonough, Ga.) page 292 reveals that R. J. Culpepper received the Southern Cross of Honor. Wife listed as Mary E. Culpepper (nee Graham) on pension roll information who died February 25, 1932, marriage date October 29, 1866, Meriwether County [Pike Co., GA per widow's pension file record]. Mrs. Culpepper's obituary appears in the Henry Co. paper. On p. 39 there is a note that microfilmed copies of Robert J. Culpepper's Pension Application records are on file at the Georgia Archives and show that "R. J. Culpepper enlisted in March of 1862 in Monroe County, Ga in Co. B 15th [read 45th] Ga. Vols." |

Biography* | Benjamin Franklin Culpepper was listed with a place of birth of Georgia in at least three census records and with a place of birth in Alabama in at least two census records, including the 1850 census which was the first after his birth. Perhaps Benjamin Franklin Culpepper's father had taken his family to Alabama for a time after the 1844 birth of B. F. Culpepper's brother, Robert Jefferson Culpepper, and then returned to Georgia before the 1849 birth of B. F. Culpepper's sister, Cordelia. If so, the family remained only a short time and B. F. Culpepper spent his childhood in Georgia. He is noted living with his parents in the 1850 census of Pike Co., GA and again in 1860 Monroe Co., GA census records living with his mother. According to Edward Haden Culpepper, Benjamin Franklin Culpepper was a soldier in the Confederate Army. He would only have been 14 years old when the war began and he did not serve in the same unit as his older brothers, Lewis L., John William and Robert Jefferson. However, there is a listing in the Georgia Civil War Index for a "Benjamin F. Culpepper" serving in Co. G of the 1st Georgia (Fannins) Reserves. A second entry for a "Benjamin Culpepper" serving in Capt Pemberton's Co. of Georgia Cavalry is believed to have been for a Benjamin Culpepper who was living in Muscogee Co., GA at the time of the war. According to Benjamin F. Culpepper's Civil War record, he enlisted 28 Apr 1864 with Capt. W. L. Hubbard in Atlanta, GA. He was 17 years old, 5' 10 1/2" tall with dark hair and a dark complexion but blue eyes. He was a farmer. Later when "Benjamin F. Culpepper, Sr." applied for a Confederate pension in 1911, he wrote that he had enlisted 5 Apr 1863 (a year earlier than the record shows) in Atlanta, GA as a private in Co. G 1st Georgia Reserves. He noted that he had been discharged 3 May 1865 at Albany, GA. After the war, Benjamin F. Culpepper returned home and married Mary Jane Elliott in Upson Co., GA and the couple is recorded with their young family in the 1870 census of Upson Co., GA. Some time before 1880 Benjamin F. Culpepper apparently moved his family to Spalding Co., GA where he was noted in 1880, 1900 and 1910 census records. "Benjamin F. Culpepper, Sr." was noted living in Griffin, Spalding Co., GA when he applied for a Confederate pension in 1911. He was noted as "Sr." at this point because a grandson named Benjamin Franklin Culpepper was born in 1898. |
