Biography* | | Mrs. Ellaree Dean Speer wrote in a 17 Oct 1979 letter: Last summer I was working at cemetery in Ashland & Everette Willis was passing - saw me & stopped - came up & chatted - said he was tracing family, etc.... I told him ... next time I would bring my book & come and chat with him - Next thing I knew he had heart attack and passed away. The following obituary is from The Ashland Progress Ashland, AL Thursday 12 Apr 1979: Mr. Everett Willis, 65 Mr. Everett Alexander Willis, 65, a resident of Ashland, Alabama, passed away Thursday, April 5, 1979 at his residence following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 7, 1979 at 2:00 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church of Ashland with the Rev. Ellis Johnson and the Rev. Jack Drinkwater officiating. Burial was in the Ashland City Cemetery with Blair-Brock Funeral Home directing. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Lou Willis of Ashland; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Frances Newton of Homerville, Georgia, and Mrs. Linda Rochester of Birmingham; and 4 grandchildren. Mr. Willis was a native and lifelong resident of Ashland. For many years he was a partner in Willis Brothers Coal and Ice and for the past 40 years was owner of Willis Oil Company. For many years, he was a Trustee of Clay County High School, a member of the Ashland Housing Authority, and for the past 4 years he had been a member of the Ashland City Council. He was a member of the Ashland First United Methodist Church. Pallbearers were Dr. George L. Beale, Al Willis, Gary Clifton, Leon Barker, Cleve Pace, Bill Walker and Bill Morris. |
