[Wm.?] Guthrie 54 TX m1/320.\ William's birth was recorded in the Bible of his stepfather, S. M. Guthrie, Sr.: _________________________W. F. Guthrie: _________________________Was born May 9th 1858 The S. M. Guthrie, Sr. Bible record for William's marriage reads: _________________________W. F. Guthrie: _________________________Was Married Novr 28th 1877 Keith Guthrie wrote Feb 1991: My grandfather was W. F. Guthrie the son of William D. and Martha. He set up a farm operation in the Sweet Home area but after my father, William Earl, was born the family moved to north Goliad County where they farmed and raised eleven children -- one dying after a few days. W. F. Guthrie evidently did reasonably well as a farmer and rancher until around 1900 when the boll weevils just about ruined his cotton crop for several years straight. He was a man of violent action and after a particularly bad year he packed his entire family, farm equipment, hogs, mules, etc. into a couple of box cars and headed for Wichita County where he purchased three sections of land on Beever Creek. "By God," he is quoted as saying, "I'll get away from the son-of-bitch boll weevils." All of his married sons, with the exception of one, followed their parents to Electra, including my parents William Earl and Frankie Pemberton Simmons. This all happened in 1907. William Guthrie was listed in the 1900 census of Goliad Co., TX. But he had apparently moved his family to Wichita Co., TX by 1910 since this is where he was listed with his wife, Mary, and six children in the census. Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton wrote 20 Jul 1988 that "William Francis, son of Wm. D. and Martha, lived near Electra [Wichita Co.] Texas. Finally William's death was recorded in the S. M. Guthrie, Sr. Family Bible: _________________________W. F. Guthrie _________________________Died Dec. 21, 1933. |

Guthrie, Jr. 44 TX m1/18).\ Shadrack's birth was recorded in his father's Bible: _________________________S. M. Guthrie Jr.: _________________________Was born November 22nd 1864 Shadrack was listed as a "Saloon Keeper" in the 1900 census of Yoakum, Lavaca Co., TX. By 1910 he had apparently moved to Baylor Co., TX since this is where he was noted in census records. Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton noted on a Shadrack Guthrie descendant list that Shadrack Marion Guthrie, Jr. "also owned a meat market." Finally Shadrack's death was recorded in the S. M. Guthrie, Sr. Family Bible: _________________________S. M. Guthrie _________________________Died Dec. 23rd, 1954 S. M. Guthrie's daughter, Mrs. V. V. (Lyda Guthrie) Cherry wrote the following entry which appeared in Salt Pork to Sirloin: The History of Baylor Co., Texas 1878-1930 published by the Baylor County Historical Society: S. M. GUTHRIE, JR. FAMILY by Lyda Cherry My parents were the late S. M. Guthrie Jr. and Emma Goodson Guthrie. They were both born at Yoakum, Texas Lavaca County. To this union were born: Leslie W., Susie Irene, Lyda, Joe, Jessie Lee Martin, J. B., and Dottie Guthrie Harland. Of the above named children the following are deceased; Leslie W., Susie Irene, and Joe Guthrie. We moved to Baylor County December 1906 and we settled on the W. H. Portwood Ranch in the Round Timber Community. We lived on Mr. Portwood's until December 1907 when we moved to my grandfather's place, S. M. Guthrie Sr., in the Marys Creek Community. S. M. Guthrie Sr. owned the Old King Collie Place. I believe Rex Carpenter or George W. Higgins owns the place at present. In December 1909 we moved back to Mr. Portwood's place in the Round Timber Community. We lived there until January 1915. My father bought the Buck Farr Place just west of the Round Timber Store. My brother Leslie and sister Irene and I went to school at Marys Creek. It was my first school. When we moved back to Round Timber we attended that school until it burned in April, 1917. Leslie joined the Navy and Irene passed away so I dropped out of school until 1919 and I went to Megargel and finished school there, that term. In September 1920 I attended N. T. S. T. C. at Denton and obtained a teaching certificate. I taught the ensuing school term at White Flat, Texas in Motley Co. There I met my late husband V. V Cherry. I taught school 40 years. Thirty-three in Texas schools mostly in Baylor County: Five years at Westminister, California and two years in Connecticut, Groton and Uncasville. In my early days, the Round Timber Church played a very important part in our community. We had Sunday School and Church every Sunday. The church at that time belonged to the Methodist. Once a month they let us "Good Baptist" hold church. Grandpa Thurman and Bro. Stanley usually did the preaching for the Baptist. During summer we would have a singing convention at least once a month. We had an arbor in what is now my brother Bill's farm. We would have camp meetings in the summer. It was at one of these meetings that I was converted in 1919 and joined the Baptist Church. Once a year we had a Children's Day Program in June. One year we went to Spring Creek and put on our program and the next year Spring Creek would come put on a program at our church. Of course the big event to us children was the "big big" diner on the ground, but we had ours under the arbor. When any sorrow befell any family, the whole community turned out in the most wonderful way. The late Walter Howe Family were our best neighbors. Clara Howe Thurman and I were very dear friends. The late Tom Parker Family lived just below the hill from the Round Timber Cemetery. The late John W. Stevens lived north of Round Timber Store. The late Jim Hamby, whose late wife was Mattie Randall, Family lived next door to the late W. S. Howe Family. The Thurman family, Uncle Henry and his father lived east of the store. In our community the school did not play too great a part. Each Friday afternoon we would have a spelling bee and at the end of each school, we would have a community play. One teacher that has left a lasting impression on me is Laura Cockrell, the present Mrs. R. Q. Jones of Megargel, Texas. At present Mrs. Jessie Lee Martin is living in Midland, Texas. Brother Bill lives at his home in the Round Timber Community on the late John Johnson place. Dottie Harland and I live in Seymour, Texas. |

Biography* | | Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton, on the Shadrack Guthrie descendant list, listed Emma's date of birth as "1-27-74 or 1877." In the 1900 census, Emma's birth was listed as Jan 1874 and she was listed as 36 years old in the 1910 census. In the 1900 census Emma was listed as having had five children, four of whom were still living in 1900. Only four of these children have been accounted for. In the 1910 census Emma was listed as having had five children all of whom were still living. Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton, on a Shadrack Guthrie descendant list, listed an unnamed twin for Lyda born in 1900. Perhaps this child died before the 1910 census and the twins were counted as a single birth event in 1910. Jacqueline then notes that a delayed birth certificate for Lyda Hopkins Guthrie born 3-10-1900 records her parents as: Shed Marion Guthrie age 34 (his 4th child) Emma Goodson Guthrie age 26 (her 3rd child) It is not clear if this means that Shadrack Guthrie, Jr. had a previous marriage. No record of any marriage for Shadrack Guthrie, Jr. has been found in Lavaca Co., TX. Jacqueline also noted on the Shadrack Guthrie descendant list: Lillie Guthrie Edmondson, daughter of Lem Guthrie, says there was a Bill, Leslie, Lydia, Dottie, Susie, and Jessie. |

His birth was recorded in his father's Bible: _________________________Lemuel Guthrie: _________________________Was born October 7th 1872 Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton noted on a Shadrack Guthrie descendant list that "Lem was a Trustee for Barton School in Motley Co., TX c[irc]a 1935." The following entry was written by Lemuel's daughter, Mrs. O. J. (Lemmie Guthrie) Day, and appeared on p. 261 of Of Such As These - A History of Motley County by Eleanor Traweek: The Lem Guthrie Family In January 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Lem Guthrie and their six children arrived in Matador after a 135 mile trip from their former home near Seymour, Texas. The trip took 3 days in a covered wagon with over night stops in wagon yards, which was a great adventure for the children. They greatly anticipated getting to Motley, a country wich was so lush, (they had been told) that an abundance of mellons grew wild. Somebody was exaggerating. They found wild mellons all right--but they were pie mellons! Mr. Guthrie, with the assistance of Ernest Fisher, established an early freight line to Floydada soon after he arrived in Motley County. In those days it often took three to four days to make the trip with a heavily loaded wagon--depending, of course, on how muddy the roads were. In the early 20's Guthrie and Sons built the first drive-in filling station in Matador and a building to house their new Chevrolet car agency. in the early 30's a small family chain of movie theatres was established. The first one was built and operated by Lee Guthrie in Wheeler, Texas. Other locations were at Matador, Lefors and Eden, Texas; and Tipton, Erick, and Wetumka, Oklahoma. All of the family had first names starting with the letter "L": Lem (Mr. Guthrie), Lena (Mrs. Guthrie); Lemmie, Lilly, Lee, Lovena, Lloyd, and Lamar. Of their four grandchildren, all had an "L" in one of their first names. The Guthrie children, four of whom became school teachers, married as follows: Lemmie to O. J. Day, Lilly to A. S. "Bert" Edmondson; Lee to Laura Wimberly, Lovena to Joe Tom Jackson, Lloyd to L.H "Dick" Dirickson, and Lamar to Georgia Westmoreland. Grandchildren of the couple are James Lee Day (m. Dorine Holmesly), Linda Jovena Jackson (m. L. M. Lockett), Gayle Lamar Guthrie (m. Belle Stephens) and Marion Lee Guthrie (m. Lydia Lang). There are ten great grandchildren. Both Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie were native Texans. Lem was born in Lavaca Co. and Mrs. Guthrie, the former Lena Buesing, in Fayette County. Mr. Guthrie died at Wheeler, Texas in March 1957. Mrs. Guthrie died Nov. 1, 1961 at Tipton, Ok. They are buried at Wheeler, Texas. |
