Biography* | John Thomas Butler was the son of William Edward and Effen Lourania (Culpepper) Butler. He was born and raised in Albertville, Marshall Co., AL.1 J. T.'s sister, Mary Lillian (Butler) Pierce, wrote of their childhood:2 It was during the Big Depression when we were growing up. We had a home, plenty of food and clothes. That's about all 80% of the people had in those days.... Ken Butterworth, wrote in "The Biography of J. T. Butler":3 He [J. T.] spent most of his boyhood days helping his grandmother [Mrs. John James (Nancy Jane Willoughby) Culpepper] and other relatives on their farms. His recreation consisted of going to his grandmother's house on Saturday nights to listen to the radio. He attended church regularly and, after church services, he would swing from treetop to treetop in the woods, near the church building. He also would go to turkey trots with some of his friends.... It was during this time that he met his wife-to-be [fourth cousin, Gladys Dean]. He was unloading fodder and storing it in the barn when she came up with some butter for his grandmother. As time passed they began to date steady. They began going to church together, in a meeting house which was about three and one-half miles away. There were several Sundays that they walked fifteen miles to church services and singings. Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sunday evenings were his days to visit her, and, no matter what the situation was, she went to bed at nine o'clock sharp. One of the ways in which they communicated was by dropping a note in a bird's nest, located on a fence post between their homes. They used this type of communication until they married. In February of 1931, J. T.'s father died. J. T. was sixteen years old. In November of 1931, he married Gladys Dean and they settled down to raise their family. Ken Butterworth continued: They were married, even though her father advised against it. He said they would starve to death. On their honeymoon they attended a turkey trot, and to make the trip, he [J. T.] went to the bank and checked out a two and one-half dollar gold piece, which he had in a savings account.... As time passed, there were four children born, three boys and one girl. At this time, they were living in a log house and he [J. T.] was working for a nearby textile mill. J. T. received questionnaires from the U.S. Army and he decided to join the service. He was 27 years old when the United States entered World War II. Ken Butterworth wrote: While serving in the Army he was transferred to several foreign countries. He was stationed in Italy, Germany, and Korea, just to name a few of them.... He retired with twenty-seven years of service.... After retiring from the Army in nineteen hundred and sixty-six, he worked at Chastain Roberts, a wholesale grocery warehouse, before getting a job with the government. J. T. had deep religious roots. His sister, Mary Lillian (Butler) Pierce, wrote:2 [J. T.] read the Bible through twice by the time he was 12 yrs. old, joined the Baptist Church & was baptized at age 12. Ken Butterworth wrote about J. T.'s later years: He attended the Oxford Church of Christ, and because of his wisdom, age, and dedication, he was appointed an elder.... There was a small congregation at nearby Heflin that was struggling to exist, and, after being asked to come and work with the congregation there, he decided that he would try to help them in any way possible. The congregation of Oxford dreaded seeing him leave but knew the small congregation could use his knowledge and wisdom to their advantage.... As the work for the church was making progress, there was a serious setback, not only for the church he was attending, but for God's work as a whole. He was involved in an accident that almost took his life. In this accident he suffered from a broken arm and leg, his right side was seriously damaged, brain damage, one lung collapsed, his spleen was removed, and other lacerations. There was little hope of his living; but as one Negro preacher said, "They forgot what God could do." Mr. Butler stayed in the intensive care unit in the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, twenty-eight days. He also stayed for two more months in the Veterans Hospital in Birmingham, and six months in a nursing home. It was through prayer, faith in God, and his desire to stay alive, that he survived. J. T. died in 1974 at the age of 60. |

Biography* | 16 Jan 2020 | In a 9 Jan 1978 letter, Mary Lillian Butler Pierce wrote "I live at grandfather Jack's [John James Culpepper's] old homeplace, built in 1893." 19 Jan 1979, she added that "I have about 10 acres with the house.... Billy Dunn tells me that I am the only one that has any of the Culpepper property that he knows of." She went on to talk about herself: "I am a Missionary Baptist. I belong to the W.M.U. which is Women's Missionary Union. I read lots on missions, read anything spiritual and good. I have already read the Bible including the Psalms this winter...." In her column,"Mountain Briefs," Marion Owen wrote about Mary Lillian Butler Pierce: Just as five scattered seeds can create a vast and beautiful forest on the side of a mountain, so can the seed of loving kindness create a vast and magnificent radiance upon the face of someone in need. Mary Lillian Butler Pierce greets the early morning hours with a purpose then continues through the day making good use of all the hours that follow. A true native of Albertville, Mary Lillian was born in 1915 to Ed and Effin Culpepper Butler. She had a brother, J.T. (deceased) and a sister, Sallie Mae. Mrs. Pierce's grandparents moved to Sand Mountain from Clay County [they were in Randolph Co., AL in 1880 census] in 1883 in covered wagons. It took five days to make the 100-mile move. The couple first lived in a log cabin. During the first 16 years on Sand Mountain, the Butlers built a house and it is in this house that Mary Lillian now lives. She maintains the home except for the lawn mowing. Mrs. Pierce remembers when the textile plant was built in 1927. The wages were approximately $4.80 a week for 64 hours of work at 8 cents an hour. She was later employed at the plant and worked there for 37 years before her retirement [part of that time 3rd shift]. Mary Lillian started out in life to be a nurse but was forced to quit school to help her dad provide for the family. This lady was baptized in Slab Creek in 1928 and became a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in 1931. She is still active in this church. Mary's ministry is visiting and sitting with the sick and shut-ins. She will not accept compensation for this assistance because this service was once her plan for following a career in nursing. She enjoys baking and taking foods to those in need. She truly lives the example set forth nearly 2,000 years ago by one who gave his love to all. Mary Lillian has expressed her feeling for others when she has said, "I love people; I love to get along; I cannot tolerate discord." A truly great Alabama lady! She has lived within a 5-mile radius of Albertville all of her life. Mary Lillian wrote, 24 Jan 1979, that she was baptized by Rev. Bob Isdell "in 1928 in a creek of water. There were no pools in the churches in those days, at least none in country churches." Mary Lillian had cancer surgery in the early 1970's and had cobalt therapy and 2 years of chemotherapy. In a 30 Jan 1979 letter, she wrote that she had "inherited my bad health from Butlers." In a 5 Feb 1979 letter she wrote: "My Dad's family, on both sides, father & mother, bro. & sisters, all died young.... all died of heart dropsy and stroke." 30 Aug 1991 Mary Lillian wrote that she had small cataracts in her eyes and had difficulty reading. On 24 Oct 1991, she added "I have bursitis in my right arm and shoulder and right hip. I can hardly write or walk it hurts so bad." She also mentions that "all of my nieces and nephews call me Aunt Bibbie." In a 23 May 1993 letter Mary Lillian wrote "I have arthritis of the spine and I absolutely can't stand and look & search for things any more...." In a 1 Oct 1993 letter Mary Lillian wrote that she had a $50.00 Confederate bill that that her grandfather Robert Jefferson Culpepper had given to her when she was three years old. Mary Lillian also recalled that she went to Solitude Church until Feb 1931 when she moved to Albertville. Mary Lillian and Otis Pierce had no children.1 |

Biography* | In the 1910 census, Lonnie was listed as having been married twice and seven children were living in the household but Nancy, Lonnie's second wife, was only listed as having had one child in the second marriage. The other children were presumably by Lonnie's first wife: Eddie 17 AL, Vernon 16 AL, Annie M 14 AL, Homer 12 AL, Nora 8 AL. There is a problem with sixth child, Carl, who was listed as age 2 and born in Alabama. Since Lonnie was listed as having been married to Nancy for three years, either the marriage information or the age of the child is incorrect or Nannie had two children by Lonnie by 1910. Since there is a six year gap between Carl and the older children, it has been assumed that Carl was also Lonnie and Nancy's child. |
