Obituary*7 Sep 1936 Maury Young, 29, State Highway Patrolman with headquarters in this city, died in a local hospital Saturday night (5 Sep 1936) from injuries received when his motorcycle crashed into the rear of a wagon driven by J, C, Kirk, on the Troy-Montgomery highway, four miles north of Pine Level shortly after 7:00 o’clock Saturday night. As the motorcycle crashed into the wagon the gasoline tank burst and the machine ignited pinning the officer beneath. His body was badly burned, his right leg broken in two places, skull fractured and critical internal injuries. Two motorist, H. D. Finlay of Montgomery and H. B. Fordham of this city, happened upon the scene shortly after the accident, and after extinguishing the flames placed the injured man into an automobile of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ward, of Guntersville and brought him to a hospital in this city. Young left this city shortly after noon Saturday, en-route to Montgomery to have repairs made on his motorcycle and was on his return trip here that the tragic accident occurred. Mr. Young had been stationed in this city since the state launched the Highway patrol system and made a number of friends here, prior to that he had lived in Fayette, Alabama. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Roberta Culpepper Young: a daughter, Milner Jane, age 3: his parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Young of Fayette: two sisters, two brothers and a number of other relatives. The body was sent to Fayette, Ala., by Rhodes Funeral Home Sunday morning and burial took place in that city at 11:00 o’clock today.2
