Obituary* | 29 Jan 2018 | John MacArthur passed away December 22, 2017 and reunited with his mother and father, Helen and John. He suffered a long time with COPD in addition to other medical concerns. He was discharged from the hospital under the supervision of hospice care. His wife, Jean and step-daughter Nicole cared for him at home until he passed quietly in his sleep. He was a warrior, always fighting the good fight. Jean told him him that cats have nine lives, but he had fourteen. Dr. Mansour was particularly supportive of John for many years. John was fortunate to have had many good doctors.
In addition to his career in education, John enjoyed a full, active life traveling, classic cars, classic movies, and flowers. He had a broad and deep knowledge of all things and places that caught his fancy. He was proud of his Scottish heritage. He cared for his mother for many years with little help. They were best friends. He definitely lived his life his way and had no regrets.
John's life began in Brooklyn, NY, December 27, 1944. The family's moves were based on his father's position with Allstate Insurance Company of which he was a lifelong employee. They moved to New Jersey, Pittsburgh, PA, Chicago, where he spent his teenage years, and then onto Menlo Park, CA.
He graduated Berkeley in 1968 with a Bachelor's Degree and a teaching certificate, and in 1973 earned a Master's Degree in Urban Educational Policy and Planning from UCLA. John taught history at Charles Drew Jr. High in South Central Los Angeles from 1968 to 1976. In 1976, he joined the Oxnard School District at Haydock Intermediate School as Dean of Students. He was an administrator at McKinna, Chavez, Elm Street, and Curren Schools. During this time he was active in Oxnard Beautiful planting many trees and flowers.
Upon retirement, he served on the Board of Trustees for the District. Many citizens appreciated his perspective and insights. John was always sensitive to Oxnard families and strived to have everyone feel comfortable and welcome. He was supportive of the American Mexican Educators Assn. and the Classified staff. He and his wife served on the Driffill School Renovation District Committee helping make improvements for the Driffill families.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Culpepper MacAthur, who oversaw his care for over nine years and by his extended family. They were able to travel to Canada, the East Coast, and the Panama Canal. He is also survived by two younger sisters, Cynthia and Roberta, who live in Northern California.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Oxnard Elks Lodge, Sat., Feb. 17, 2:00-4:00 PM. His ashes will be strewn from Diamond Head, Hawaii, one of his favorite places. Wear a Hawaiian shirt if you'd like.1 |
