"Fred and Era's son (Fred) went through life using the last name of Scruggs, his last step-father's name, although within the family he was known as Fred Culpepper. To muddy the waters more, on the census of 1920, he was listed as the son of James and Minnie Belase and Era was listed as their daughter, but on a Social Security application, he did list Era Belase as his mother. Fred died in August of 1983. I believe he had two children, but, of course their last names would be Scruggs." - Commonwealth of Kentucky / Health Data Branch, compiler, Kentucky Death Index, 1911-2000, Online database at Ancestry.com.
