(?) Culpepper of Texas
Male, #56431, (say 1840 - before 1870)
African* | | He was an African-American born into slavery. His ancestry is unknown.1 |
Research note* | | The 1870 census of Grimes County, Texas shows two black males, Philip (age 13) and Frank (age 10) who were born in Texas and living in the household of Amory Calloway, a white farmer born in Georgia. Amory had a 21 year old son born in Alabama, and six other children ranging in age from 19 down to 6, all born in Texas. Thus Amory and his family had probably been in Texas for about 20 years. We have made the assumption that young Philip and Frank are brothers and that their parents were deceased. However, it is possible that they are the sons of Francis Culpepper, a black farm worker who was enumerated in the 1870 census as 26 years old and living in the adjacent county of Madison. If you know anything more about these individuals, please contact Culpepper Connections.2 |
