Wit: Richard Dunn, Cornelius Thims -- Recorded, 4 July 1750. [The witnessing of this deed by Cornelius Thims may indicate he was the oldest son of Thomas Thimbs.]1

Death*after 6 Mar 1758 He died at Bladen Co., North Carolina, after 6 Mar 1758.1
Will*6 May 1758 He made a will at Bladen Co., North Carolina, on 6 May 1758, naming as heir(s) Prudence (?) and Joseph Thames.

Will of Thomas Themes, 6 May 1758, Bladen Co., NC, Will Book 2, p 463: "To my loving wife Prudence Themes one Hundred acres of Land Being the plantation where I now Live Etc. To my Daughter Phebe Themes and to my Daughter Marcy Themes I give a bed & furniture & a chest of drawers. The Land above mentioned after the decease of my beloved wife I give and bequeath unto my Son Samuel Themes & his heirs and assignees forever. Also to my son Joseph Themes I give the sum of five Shillings also I give unto my son Cornelius Themes the sum of five Shillings also I give unto my Son Thomas Themes one hundred acres of Land Lying in the provence above and the County of Craven on the Flat Swamp also I give unto my sons John Themes & Amos Themes two hundred and twenty acres of land lying on Dunns Creek to Be Equally Divided Between Each of them. Mentions daughters Elizabeth Themes and Pricilla Dunn."
Wit: Josiah Evans & Jonathan Evans Jr. Signed by Thomas Themes.1

Biography* Walter Gabennesch says: "In his will of 1758, Thomas leaves land in Craven County to Thomas, one of his sons. Will was recorded as Thomas Thomas. It was witnessed by Josiah Evans and brother Jonathan Evans in 1758. Josiah and Jonathan were the brothers of Mary Evans who is purported to have married Cornelius Thames one of the sons of Thomas. All of Thomas Thames children and wife Prudence are named in his Will. The dates of birth of Thomas, Prudence and their children have been estimated by me and some are contrary to the dates estimated or implied by Vera Marshal in her book Proud to Remember and other books published since. The purpose of estimating these dates is to better try to determine a time line for this family as it either dies in, or moves out of, Bladen Co. NC. That seems important when searching for people with these names in SC and other Southern States. The 1763 Bladen County tax list shows three Thems paying a poll tax which means they were at least 16 years of age. We know the son Joseph, who remained in NC, is married and probably in Cumberland Co. in 1763. He also was of age. This seems to indicate that three of his brothers were still alive and in NC in 1763. We believe they went to SC by 1770. Joseph Thames the son of Thomas was either the oldest or he became the oldest surviving heir, according to the 'Laws of Primogeniture' of the time, when Cornelius died. I believe it was the latter."1

I base my supposition that Cornelius was the oldest son of Thomas Thames on the fact he was the son who witnessed the first purchase of land by Thomas in Bladen Co. I speculate that a strong case can be made for the demise of Cornelius, wife Mary, mother Prudence and brother Samuel to have occurred very close to the same date. This would not be uncommon because of the many diseases which regularly visited the low lying areas along the Cape Fear River, to include Malaria. This would account for the land that Samuel inherited passing to Joseph and not Cornelius. This would also account for the 1763 poll tax showing 'three Thems' in the household of Jno. Mclendel. I would further speculate that these 'three Thems' could have been Thomas, John and Amos."1

Is it read soon after birth such as a Christening or is it done later in life when she is aware of what is happening? Does it mean she has just moved to the area? If that were true why wasn't the letters of the rest of the family read? If I could find the answer to this question I could better determine the age of Marcy Thames."1
