Pauline May Hampton1
Female, #44197, (9 Aug 1927 - 26 Jan 2019)
Father* | Edward Homer Hampton |
Mother* | Lessie Viola Carpenter |
Biography* | From Sharon Boling: When Mama was a small child and Sara was a baby, Grandmama had to go to the field and chop a short row of cotton. She normally left Mama and Sara with Vonie Luker when she went to the field. This time, though, since it was such a short row, she was going to take them with her. Mama wanted to go stay with the Lukers, but Grandmama told her, "No," she had to go sit on the pallet with sister. When Grandmama got to the top of the hill, Mama was right behind her. But by the time she got down the hill, Mama was gone. She looked all around and finally saw Mama running up the hill at the Lukers' home. Grandmama cut her a little keen hickory and went to get Mama. Mama was playing in the yard with Cordial Luker. He told Grandmama to leave Mama there, they would see after her. Grandmama said that she had told Mama she could not come to the Lukers, that she must sit with sister on the pallet. She told Cordial that she would carry Mama part of the way, but she would have to walk part of the way. Grandmama said it took a long time for the Luker children to forgive her for coming after Mama. And on the way back, Mama would stop every little bit. Grandmama said Mama was mad at her for a long time. . When Mama was a senior in high school, she wanted her class ring. She went to Granddaddy and asked for the money to buy the ring. He told her that if he had a dollar, he would be doing good and that he just couldn't buy the ring for her. She ran off crying, and he started to cry. It really upset Grandmama, too. Several days later, Mildred Miller came down to visit. She asked Grandmama what was wrong; Grandmama told her that there was nothing wrong. Mildred told her not to tell her that, she knew something was wrong. She told Mildred about Mama wanting the ring. Mildred wrote Grandmama a check for the ring. Grandmama began selling anything extra that she had to the barter man. By the time, Mama graduated, she had paid Mildred back with nickles and dimes. On the day Mama got her ring, Grandmama saw her get off the bus and go running to the back 40. Grandmama asked the girl with Mama where she had gone. The girl told her that Mama had gone to show Granddaddy her ring. Granddaddy asked her, withtears in his eyes, where she had gotten the ring. Mama and Grandmama explained that Mildred had given the check to Grandmama and that Grandmama had paid Mildred back. . Mama always worked from the first moment I can remember. I only remember her working in a sewing plant, but she did work for the telephone company for awhile. Mama was 39 when Pam was born. I remember exactly where I was when she told me she was going to have a baby. We were hanging clothes out at Grandmother's when she lived at Mrs. Sanderson's place. . She is a great example of what a mother should be. She is loving and giving, so loving and giving that she would give her children and grandchildren and friends the shirt off her back if she needed to. . When Grandmother was in the nursing home, Mama went down to see her almost every day. The only time she didn't go was if she were out of town or sick. She washed Grandmother's gowns and then took them back the next day. She really, really wanted to bring Grandmother back to her house, but knew she wouldn't be able to do it by herself. . When Leatherwood (Mama's church) was going through a bad time with its pastor, lots of folks left. Not Mama. She said that until the Lord convinced her that she should leave, she would just stay there.1 | |
