Norfolk County
Personal Property Tax Lists
1791 - 1807, Grouped by Name
Transcribed
by Lewis W. Griffin, Jr. from
LDS Family History Library US/CAN Film 1870175
The following records help replace
the 1790 and 1800 censuses for Norfolk County, both of which are lost.
All Culpepper males age 16 or over, residing in the county during 1791 -
1807 are listed below. In some few cases, females are listed, if they
had a male over 16 residing in their home, or if they owned a horse,
mare, or colt. Some records
mention slaves, as well, although not by name. See http://www.lva.lib.va.us/pubserv/vanotes/vanotes11.htm
for a more detailed account of these records, which are available on
paper from 1782 to 1930, and on LDS microfilm from 1782 to 1850.
Warren
Culpepper Note: I have also added to the list the 1782
census records provided by Bill Russell. The assignment to a
particular individual is my own best guess.

John
Culpepper.
This
writer is reluctant to attempt to identify all of the John
Culpeppers without more research. These tax records have been grouped
under individuals and over years by this writer, and my choices as to
which tax record applied to which John, may not necessarily be correct. Serious researchers should consult the original records.

Note: It is possible that the "B" in B. Robert #4 is
some form of designator and not an actual initial, as middle
names for those born prior to 1800 were uncommon. And
individuals using a first initial and middle name were even more
rare.
The
other early Robert Culpeppers of the Tidewater area found in the
Culpepper Family Tree and who are potentially relevant to the
identity problem are:

of the above records, but placed here for reference of other
records. |
|
Robert

to be a candidate for one of the above records, but placed
here for reference of other records. |
|

Thomas of Norfolk (#683), who died in 1786. But this writer is reluctant to
attempt to identify all of them without more research. These tax
records have been grouped under individuals and over years by this
writer, and my choices as to which tax record applied to which Thomas,
