Norfolk Southside,
1775 - 1799

horizontal rule

The Culpeppers first settled in America in the extreme southeastern portion of Virginia, and many remain there to this day. Now known as "the Southside" and officially called South Hampton Roads, this area includes the counties and independent cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Portsmouth, Princess Anne, Suffolk, Surry and Virginia Beach.

During the period included on this page, the political jurisdictions in the Southside area were (alphabetically)

bullet

Isle of Wight County (1637-present)

bullet

Nansemond County (1645-1974)

bullet

Norfolk County (1691-1963)

Notes:

  1. The source of Tithable lists for 1775-1780 was Norfolk County, Virginia Tithables by Elizabeth B. Wingo and W. Bruce Wingo. In general, males over 16 were taxed in Virginia. For more information on Virginia Tithables, see this Tithables Primer.

  2. Unless otherwise noted, the transcriptions of the records for 1782-1799 are by Lew Griffin. From 1782-1790, the Personal Property Tax Lists are from LDS Film 1870174 Item 2. From 1791-1812 (1808 list is missing), from LDS Film 1870175.

  3. If you can identify any of the names in red, please let us know.

  4. Culpepper was occasionally spelled "Culpeper" in the original deeds. The spelling did not appear to be significant, hence we have consistently used the modern spelling in this document.
