The Lord Culpeper Restaurant
401 South Main Street,
Culpeper, VA
The following was provided by Royce Culpepper, who in 1998 found this history on the back of
their menu.
Welcome to the Lord Culpeper Restaurant.
The Lord Culpeper Hotel was completed
in 1933, and formally opened to the public on December 21st of that year. It was
constructed by Charles H Hitt and the Culpeper Planning Mill.
The outside is constructed of beautiful tapestry brick which are of
Virginia Manufacture. We are as proud of this building now as the Town Of Culpeper was in
1933. Several months of renovations have gone into the first floor with plans for a
complete building restoration.
E. Jackson Egghorn and his wife Elizabeth leased the Hotel originally
and Miss Mildred Bispham, from a family famed "for good living" was in charge of
the restaurant. We hope to follow with quality of food that was here in 1933, if not
better. Jack lived in the building in what is now my apartment. Having been known for his
lavish parties, we hope to carry on that tradition as well.
I think Jack was some what of a prankster, as I have been living in the
building for several months and have noticed many peculiar happenings. Lights come on and
water runs in rooms where no one has been. I think his dog "Happy" has a spirit
lingering here as well. My cat "Lord Culpeper" gets startled as though a dog
were present.
Jack was also mayor of Culpeper and a pharmicist at Bruce's Drug Store.
Not only have I had experiences with Mr. Egghorn's presences, so have workers who have
been here for months. Tools disappear, things fall down, etc.
If anyone has any history or stories of the building, I'll be glad to
hear them. I know most people have or have had family work or entertain here. Don't worry
about Jack, I left him his glass of Cutty Sark. Just sit down, relax, and enjoy a
delicious meal.
Thank You,
