County History and Geography

On the southwestern edge of the High Plains region of southwest Texas, Ward County was formed in 1887 from Tom Green County. Monahans, the county seat, is on I-20 and the Missouri Pacific Railroad, about 35 miles SW of Odessa and 320 miles east of El Paso. The production of petroleum and natural gas are quite important to the economy. Ward County is bordered by the counties of Loving, Winkler, Ector, Crane, Pecos and Reeves.
