Hutchinson County

County History and Geography

In the north central section of the Panhandle, Hutchinson County was formed in 1876 (organized in 1901) from the Bexar and Young territories. Since the 1920s, petroleum has been the chief industry; the southern part of Hutchinson County is the center of oil, gas, petrochemical, and synthetic-rubber production in the Panhandle. In the county is one of the world's largest pump stations for natural gas. Its county seat, Stinnett, is about 50 miles NE of Amarillo. Hutchinson  is bounded by the counties of Hansford, Roberts, Carson and Moore.
