County History and Geography

In the Inner Coastal Plain and the northeastern part of North Carolina, Northampton County was formed in 1741 from Bertie County. Jackson, its county seat, is on US-158, about 85 miles northeast of Raleigh and 70 miles southwest of Norfolk, Virginia. Northampton is bordered by the North Carolina counties of Warren, Halifax, Bertie and Hertford, and the Virginia counties of Brunswick, Greensville and Southampton.
