New Hanover County

County History and Geography

In the Inner Coastal Plain and in the southeastern part of North Carolina, New Hanover County was formed in 1729 from Craven County. Wilmington, its county seat, is on US-17 and the terminus of I-40, about 125 miles south of Raleigh. New Hanover is bordered by the the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Fear River, and the counties of Brunswick and Pender.
