County History

Simpson County, part of the Choctaw cession of 1820, was formed in 1824 and named in honor of Judge Josiah Simpson, a territorial judge of Mississippi. In 1837, it had a free white population of 2,329 and slaves numbering 891. A majority of these early settlers came from the older portions of the State on the west and south. The County Courthouse and all records were destroyed in both 1840 and 1872. Now part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area, Simpson County's population was 27,639 as of 2000. Its county seat is Mendenhall, and the largest town, Magee. Other towns include Braxton, D'Lo, Harrisville and Pinola. Adjacent counties are Rankin County (north), Smith County (east), Covington County (southeast), Jefferson Davis County (south), Lawrence County (southwest), Copiah County (west).
