Franklin County
County History
Established
on 21 Dec 1809 while David Holmes of Virginia was serving as territorial
governor, Franklin is one of the oldest Mississippi counties. It was
named for Benjamin Franklin, As of 2000, its population was 8,448. The
county seat is located at the town of Meadville, in the center of the
county. Other towns include Bude and Roxie. The County Courthouse burned
in 1877 and some records were destroyed. Franklin County is bordered by
Jefferson County (north), Lincoln County (east), Amite County (south),
Wilkinson County (southwest) and Adams County (west).
