St. Bernard Parish was formed in 1807 as an original
parish. Its
parish seat,
Chalmette, is on
the Mississippi River about 6 miles south of New Orleans. St. Bernard is bordered by the
parishes of Orleans and
Plaquemines, plus the Gulf of Mexico.
