History

In the Greater New Orleans region, Jefferson Parish was formed in 1825 from Orleans Parish. Its parish seat, Gretna, is across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Jefferson is bordered by the parishes of Orleans, Plaquemines, Lafourche and St. Charles, plus the Gulf of Mexico.
