History

Bordering Georgia and the Atlantic coast in the Northeastern Region of Florida, Nassau County was formed in 1824 from Duval County. Its county seat, Fernandina Beach, is on Route A1A about 25 miles north of Jacksonville and just across the St. Mary's River from Georgia. Nassau is bordered by the Florida counties of Duval and Baker, and the Georgia counties of Camden and Charlton.

Obituaries

Arren O. Wilder, 88, Nassauville, husband of Agnes Cook Wilder for 67 years, passed away Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at his residence on Cook Road. A native of Brunswick, Ga., he was the son of the late Elijay and Fannie Smith Wilder. Mr. Wilder was a commercial shrimper and fished the waters of this region for most of his life. He worked aboard several shrimp boats, including the "Florida Girl," "Annie Janet," "Maybell," "Valencia" and the "Jabberwock," which was his last boat. Mr. Wilder was a member of Springhill Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Agnes Cook Wilder; four children, Shirley Wilder (Charlie) Culpepper, Ann Wilder (Hal) Parker and Curtis (Netha Dean) Wilder, all of Nassauville, and Delton (Patty) Wilder of Austell, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Addie Wilder of Patterson, Ga.; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; a sister, Myrtle Snodgrass of Brownsville, Texas; and a brother, Freddie Wilder. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. graveside in Wilder Cemetery in Nassauville with the Rev. R.C. Mathis of Hortense, Ga., officiating. Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
