Sebastian County

County History and Geography

In the River Valley Region of western Arkansas, Sebastian County was formed in 1851 from Scott, Polk and Crawford counties. It has dual county seats: Fort Smith and Greenwood. Fort Smith is on the Arkansas River and on I-40, about 140 miles WNW of Little Rock; Greenwood is about 15 miles southeast of Fort Smith. Sebastian County is bordered by the Arkansas counties of Crawford, Franklin, Logan and Scott, and the Oklahoma county of Le Flore.
