Madison County
History
Madison County was
formed as part of the Mississippi Territory in 1808 from Indian lands. In 1818,
Madison became part of Alabama when Alabama was created as a separate territory.
The county is located in the north-central part of the state in the Interior
Plateau Region. It is bounded by Jackson, Marshall, Morgan and Limestone
counties, as well as the Tennessee county of Lincoln. The county seat was
established at Huntsville which also served as the temporary State capitol in
1819. Today, Huntsville is the home of the Marshall Space Center. Other towns
located in Madison County include New Market, Normal, Madison, Owens Cross Roads
and New Hope. Huntsville is on I-565 about 100 miles north of Birmingham.

Early Settlers
During 1900-1920, several Culpepper families moved in and out of Madison County, but
none seemed to stay for long, and they appeared to be descendants of several different
lines. Other than Josiah B. Culpepper, none are known to be part of the other Culpepper
families of Jackson, DeKalb and Cherokee counties.
