Macon County
History
Macon County was
formed in 1832 from territory acquired from the last cession of the Creek
Indians. It is located in the east-central portion of the state in the
Southeastern Plains Region. The Tuskegee National Forest is located in the
county. Macon is bordered by Elmore,
Tallapoosa, Lee,
Russell, Bullock, and
Montgomery counties. The county seat is located at Tuskegee, which is also the
site of Tuskegee University. Other towns and communities include Shorter,
Franklin, and Notasulga. Tuskegee is on I-85 about 40 miles east of Montgomery
and 40 miles west of Columbus.
