Calhoun County
History
Calhoun County was
created as Benton County in 1832 from ceded Creek Indian Territory, and in 1858
its current name was adopted. Calhoun County is located in the northeastern
section of the state in the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. The Coosa River flows
along the western boundary of the county, and Calhoun is bounded by the counties
of Etowah, Cherokee,
Cleburne, Talladega and
St. Clair. The county seat was established in
Jacksonville and then moved to Anniston in 1899. Anniston is on I-20 about 60
miles east of Birmingham.
