Obituary* | say 13 Feb 2011 | James Robert Sayers, 77, died Feb. 11 at Cheyenne Healthcare where he had been a resident for the past 11 years.
He was born Aug. 2, 1933, to Warren and Mable Sayers in Harcourt, Iowa.
Mr. Sayers was educated in the Harcourt and Mapleton, Iowa, school systems. After graduation, he began his long term employment as a telegrapher/clerk with the Union Pacific Railroad that lasted 39 years. He retired in 1990 from the UPRR Nebraska division. His railroad career was briefly interrupted by his two-year service in the U.S. Army, stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood and Ft. Crowder, Mo.
In 1957, he married Sylvia Jewel Mills in Neosho, Mo., and they had two children together, David and Sue.
In 1958, they moved to Pine Bluffs where Sylvia still resides. Mr. Sayers was a partner in the local Gambles Store with his brother, Ray, for 25 years. He worked for Loy Lough as a carpenter's assistant for 10 years.
He was an active member of the Pine Bluffs United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and numerous committees. He was a past Lion's club member, Senior Citizen advisory board member, member of the local booster club, Chamber of Commerce and Masonic Lodge.
He also served as an election judge from 1996 to 1998. He was an avid wood craftsman, golfer and pool player.
Mr. Sayers was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Mable Sayers and numerous cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; son, David; and daughter, Sue Stevenson; four grandchildren; and brother, Ray Sayers of Pine Bluffs.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home and in lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Pine Bluffs United Methodist Church, Box 662, Pine Bluffs, WY 82082 or your favorite charity in honor of Jim Sayers.
Memorial service will be announced at a later date.1 |
