She was born May 13, 1921 in Zamboanga Mindanao in the Philippines. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilber and Pilar Haltiwanger; sister, Anita D. Wall; brother, Robert W. Haltiwanger and husband Wesley Culpepper Murphy.
When her father retired from the Army they relocated to Ocala, FL where she enjoyed cheerleading and kept her award winning swimming at Silver Springs, FL. When her father was recalled to the Army, the family moved to East Point, GA in 1941 where she met her husband and moved to his hometown of Fayetteville, GA. "Be", as she was known to all, had a strong zest for life and always kept everyone around her in laughter.
When she started working, it was the Clayton General Hospital that was glad to have her. She retired as a dental receptionist and a bookkeeper. Betty had a great love of animals and raised and showed several breeds of dogs as an AKC member. She enjoyed painting as a hobby and helped start Art on the (Court) Square in Fayetteville, now and annual event. She also volunteered at the Sams School for Special Children and the Senior Citizens Center in Fayetteville. Betty was a member of North Fayette Methodist and the Open Door Sunday School class.
She is survived by daughters Patricia M. Vereen and husband Frazier of Newnan, GA and Susannah M. Wolford and husband Raymond of Jacksonville, FL. Grandchildren Louise A. Popham, Murphy Wolford, Kate A. Matthews and Elizabeth W. Mehaffey and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home in Fayetteville. Burial will follow at Fayetteville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Carl J.
