The Culpeppers first settled in America in the extreme southeastern portion of Virginia, and many remain there to this day. Now known as "the Southside" and officially called South Hampton Roads, this area includes the counties and independent cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Isle of Wight, Nansemond, Portsmouth, Princess Anne, Suffolk, Surry and Virginia Beach.

  1. Unless otherwise noted, the source of Tithable lists was Norfolk County, Virginia Tithables by Elizabeth B. Wingo and W. Bruce Wingo. In general, males over 16 were taxed in Virginia. For more information on Virginia Tithables, see this Tithables Primer.

  2. Unless otherwise noted, all transcriptions below are by Lew Griffin.

  3. If you can identify any of the names in red, please let us know.

  4. Culpepper was occasionally spelled "Culpeper" or "Colepeper" in the original deeds. The spelling did not appear to be significant, hence we have consistently used the modern spelling in this document.

28 July 1727 -- Original Will of Faithful Cherry, dated 28 July 1727 and proved 16 Feb 1727/8. "unto my son Faithful Cherry (Jr) one Heifer... when he Come to the age of Eighteen... I Desire that Thomas Culpepper Shall have him and keep him... Shall put him to School as Long as he Shall See fit... Witnesses included Thomas Culpepper and David Dale.(#683)

David Dale and Elizabeth his wife to Thomas Culpepper, for £7, 100 acres on the head of Deep Creek, "beginning at a poplar standing in Edward Brown's line," part of a grant of 300 acres to Henry Dale dated 6 Jun 1699 which now belongs to his son David Dale. 1739-1742 Norfolk Wills and Adminsitrations

ROBERT CULPEPPER SR. (born c 1663, married 1686, died Oct, 1739 was the bother of HENRY SR.), 16 Oct. 1739, signed his will and it was probated 21 Jan. 1742 (WB H p 19). It reads: “In the name of God, Amen. I ROBERT CULPEPPER of the aforesaid county (Norfolk), do make this my last will and testament.” In it he bequested to:

1.     My loving son ROBERT CULPEPPER my great Bible and Lancets, Horse harness and other instruments of iron for the use of horses. (ROBERT  born c 1689)

2.     My son JOSEPH CULPEPPER five schillings. (Born c 1695)

3.     My son BENJAMIN CULPEPPER five schillings. (Born c 1699)

4.     My daughter RACHEL WILDER half a crown. (Born c 1693)

5.     My daughter ANN WILDER half a crown. (Born c 1697)

6.     My daughter ELIZABETH WARD a Ewe and Lamb. (Born c 1687)

7.     My grandson WILLIAM CULPEPPER (son of ROBERT JR.) a cow and a calf and a Ewe and a Lamb. (Born c 1716)

8.     My daughter MARY GREEN, a Ewe and a Lamb. (Born c 1691)

9.     I give and bequesth all my land to my loving daughter MURY TART. (MURY born c 1703)

I appoint and constitute my son in law ELIZAR TART to be my full and whole Executor of this my last will and testament.

Witness: Henry Green, John Joyce and Richard Dale.”

Note: Children 2,3,4 and 5 then lived in Edgecombe Precinct, North Carolina, all others lived near their father on the East side of the West Branch of the Elizabeth River

THOMAS CULPEPPER (son of HENRY SR.), 14 Jan. 1742, with John Willis and Timothy Ives, made an inventory and appraisal of the estate of JOSEPH MANNING, deceased. His will was dated 27 March 1733 and probated on 17 Dec. 1742 (WB H p 18). He was the father of JOSEPH MANNING, born c 1728, who would, about 1754, marry MARGARET CULPEPPER, born c 1731, the daughter of THOMAS. (WHC Item 18, p 233)

ROBERT CULPEPPER SR. (son of JOHN, the London-Va. Merchant and brother of HENRY SR.), 26 Feb. 1742, an inventory of his estate not willed was made: household furniture, 4 ewes and lambs, one ram, one ewe, 3 hogs, one cow yearling, one heifer, one colt, one Bible, 2 crosscut saws and one hand saw (WB H p23). 14 Feb 1743 -- Deed Bk 13, p 110. Ruth Etheridge to Thomas Culpepper for £25, 100 acres on Cedar Creek, bounding Capt. John Whiddon, Josiah Smith, John Harberry, Thomas Manning and the Elizabeth River. Wit: Samuel ..., Thomas Nash, John Portlock (Pollick?)  She had inherited the land from her father William Suggs and her mother Ruth fenford. Her husband was John Ethridge, born 1692 and died 1742, in Norfolk County, Virginia   (WHC Item 20, p 234) (#683)

6 Feb. 1746 -- Deed Bk 14, p 24, Peter Taylor and his wife, Dorcas, of Norfolk County, Va. to Richard Bunting of Norfolk Co. for 25 pounds current money a tract of 50 acres of land on the south side of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, in (Newby’s or Hubey’s) Neck joining the lands of John Joyce and Richard Taylor being the land said Richard Bunting sold to Peter Taylor. Sign. Peter Taylor and Dorcas Taylor (X), wit. Ralph (Fenter), Sarah Culpeper (X her mark), Elanor Tart.  Transcribed by Clyde T. Colbert (#47168)
