St. Mary's Church in Lenham
(a few miles east of Harrietsham and Hollingbourne) has a
lovely monumental
Inscription for Dame Alicia Culpeper14. Dame Alicia, who died 20 Apr 1737 at
age 93, was the daughter of Sir William Culpeper13 of Preston Hall,
Baronet, and the widow of Sir Thomas Culpeper13 of Hollingbourne.
She had three sons and four daughters, two of whom survived
her: Frances Culpeper14, dowager of John Lord
Culpeper14, Baron
of Thoresway, and Margaret Culpeper14, wife of William Hamilton of
Chilson, Esq. Margaret arranged for the memorial and is also
recognized on it, but she predeceased her mother, Alicia, by six
months.

Dictionary
LENHAM, a parish in the hundred of EYHORNE, lathe of
AYLESFORD, county of KENT, 10 miles (E. by S.) from Maidstone,
containing 1959 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the
archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury, rated in the king's
books at £13. 15. 2½. T.F. Best, Esq. was patron in 1827. The
church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a handsome structure, having
at the west end a tower steeple, containing a good set of
chimes; in it are sixteen elegant stalls, a stone confessional,
and other relics of antiquity. There is a place of worship for
Independents. Lenham possesses a charter for a weekly market,
but it has been long disused. Fairs are held on June 6th and
October 23rd, for horses and cattle. John Foord, in 1766,
founded a free school for ten poor boys, and endowed it with £300,
which produces an income of about £12 per annum.

Lenham Manor
Elizabeth Culpeper, eldest daughter of John Lord Culpeper, was
the wife of James Hamilton who predeceased her in 1673. At her
death in 1709, she gave by will the manor of Lenham, with the
rest of her estates, to her son James Hamilton.
