Epitaph of
Martin Culpeper, Doctor, upon Humfry Clarke,
Esquire, his father in law, who died 14th
January, AD 1579.
Long
life well lived – it is a gift from heaven;
So lived it he, to whom this grace was given.
Well in his mind, and in his body strong,
God’s gifts were his; he used them well and long.
The Lord it is who giveth land, and fame,
Children, and wealth, to hold them in His name.
All these he gave him, on the earth to stay;
Then him, to whom He gave, He took away,
That he might live a blissful life above;
That we might know the things on earth we love –
Ourselves and ours, our fortunes here below –
Must pass; and all the Day of God shall know. |
