County History and Geography

On the Edwards Plateau in Central Texas, Mason County was formed in 1858 from the Bexar Territory.  Mason, the county seat of Mason County, is on Comanche Creek at the junction of I-87 and TX-29, about 100 miles WNW of Austin and 200 miles SW of Dallas.  Mason is bounded by the counties of McCulloch, San Saba, Llano, Gillespie, Kimble and Menard.
