Pottawatomie County
History
In the Frontier
Country of central Oklahoma,
Pottawatomie County was formed in 1891 as an
original county in Oklahoma territory. Its county seat,
Shawnee, is on
I-40 about 30 miles east of Oklahoma City. Pottawatomie is bordered by the
counties of Lincoln, Okfuskee, Seminole,
Pontotoc,
McClain, Cleveland and Oklahoma.

Census Records
A special
thanks to Pat Roberts for transcribing all of our Oklahoma Census
records.
Oklahoma was
opened to white settlers with the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The
earliest extant census for Oklahoma Territory is for 1900, and Oklahoma
Territory became a state in 1907. No Culpeppers
have been found in any Pottawatomie County censuses prior to 1930.
