Payne County
History
In the Frontier
Country of central Oklahoma,
Payne County was formed in 1890 as one of the seven
original counties. Its county seat,
Stillwater, is on
US-177 about 60 miles NNE of Oklahoma City. Payne is bordered by the counties of
Pawnee, Creek, Lincoln, Logan and Noble.

Oklahoma was
opened to white settlers with the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The
earliest extant census for the Oklahoma Territory is for 1900, and Oklahoma
Territory became a state in 1907.
