Mayes County
History
In the Green
Country of Northeastern Oklahoma,
Mayes County was formed in 1907 from Cherokee Nation
land. Its county seat,
Pryor, is on
US-69 about 130 miles ENE of Oklahoma City. Mayes is bordered by the counties of
Craig, Delaware, Cherokee, Wagoner and Rogers.

Census Records
A special

Oklahoma was
opened to white settlers with the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The
earliest extant census for Oklahoma Territory is for 1900, and Oklahoma
Territory became a state in 1907. No Culpeppers
have been found in any Mayes County censuses prior to 1920.
