Jefferson County

History
In the Great Plains
Country of southwestern Oklahoma,
Jefferson County was formed in 1907 from
Comanche County. Its county seat,
Waurika, is on
US-81 about 90 miles south of Oklahoma City. Jefferson is bordered by the Oklahoma counties of
Cotton, Stephens, Carter and Love; and by the Texas counties of
Clay and Montague.

Census Records
Oklahoma was
opened to white settlers with the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The
earliest extant census for Oklahoma Territory is for 1900, and Oklahoma
Territory became a state in 1907. No Culpeppers
have been found in any Jefferson County censuses prior to 1940.
