Hughes County
History
In southeastern Oklahoma,
Hughes County was formed in 1895 from Creek and
Choctaw Indian lands. Its county seat,
Holdenville, is on
US-270, about 70 miles ESE of Oklahoma City. Home to T. Boone Pickens, Hughes
County is bordered by the counties of Ofuskee, McIntosh, Pittsburg,
Coal, Pontotoc and
Seminole.

Census Records
Oklahoma was
opened to white settlers with the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The
earliest extant census for Oklahoma Territory is for 1900, and Oklahoma
Territory became a state in 1907. No Culpeppers
have been found in any Hughes County censuses prior to 1930.
