In his late 40's during the Revolutionary War, he served in the war as
captain of "John Culpepper's Company, Colonel David Love's Regiment, North Carolina
Troops" John had been captain of a militia group in Anson County since at least
1770. (North Carolina Revolutionary Army Accounts,
