Dare County
County History and Geography
In the Outer Coastal Plain and the easternmost county of of
North Carolina, Dare County was formed in
1870
from Currituck, Tyrrell and Hyde Counties. Manteo, its county seat, is on
US-64, about 160 miles east of
Raleigh and 100 miles south of Norfolk. Dare is bordered by the Albemarle
Sound and Currituck County on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Hyde County on the
south and Tyrrell County on the west.
