DeSoto County
County History
Established
February 9, 1836, De Soto was one of the twelve Mississippi counties
formed in that year from the territory originally belonging to the
Chickasaw nation and ceded by the Indians under the Pontotoc treaty
of 1832. It was named after Hernando De Soto, the discoverer of the
Mississippi. In 1873, part of De Soto was split off to form Tate
County. DeSoto County is part of the Memphis metropolitan area which
extends into three states (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. As
of 2000, DeSoto's population was 107,199, but by 2006 the county had
grown to a population of 144,706. This fast-paced growth is
attributed to middle-class flight from Memphis. Also fueling
development is the massive casino/resort complex located in
neighboring Tunica County, Mississippi (which in 2006 was the third
largest gambling district in the United States). DeSoto County has
the second highest per capita income in the State of Mississippi.
Its county seat, Hernando, is just south of the center of the
county. Other towns include Horn Lake, Olive Branch, Southaven and
Walls. Desoto County is bordered by Shelby County, Tennessee
(north), Crittenden County, Arkansas (west), Tunica County
(southwest), Tate County (south) and Marshall
County (east).
