Claiborne County
County History
Claiborne
County was formed while Mississippi was a Territory and was established
January 27, 1802, during the administration of William C.C. Claiborne,
Mississippi’s second territorial governor. Claiborne County was home to
a little known but profound African-American civil rights struggle
during the middle of the 20th century. As of 2000, Claiborne’s
population is 11,831, and it has the second-largest percentage (84%) of
Black residents of any American county. Its county seat and largest town
is Port Gibson. Claiborne County is bordered by Warren County (north),
Hinds County (northeast), Copiah County (southeast), Jefferson County
(south) and Tensas Parish, Louisiana (west).
