Pottawattamie County
History
In western Iowa on
the Missouri River,
Pottawattamie County was formed in about 1850 from
the purchase of lands from the Pottawattamie Indians. Its county seat,
Council Bluffs, is on I-80, across the river from Omaha, Nebraska, and about 120 miles
west of Des Moines. Pottawattamie is bordered by the Iowa counties of
Harrison, Shelby, Cass, Montgomery and Mills, as well as by the Nebraska
counties of Sarpy, Douglas and Washington.
