John E. Culpepper enlisted in
Gainesville, Ga. on September 15, 1862. In 1863 he was assigned to Co.
B, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and later served in Co. C. When the
24th and other units were consolidated to form the 7th Regiment,
Georgia Cavalry, he served in Co. D. April - August, 1864 muster roll
indicated that he lost his mount June 11, 1864. Private John Culpepper
was captured on May 8, 1865 at Athens, Ga. and paroled the same day.
Merriday H. Culpepper was his older brother and Caleb O. Latty was his
uncle, both of which were also in Co. D, 7th Georgia Cavalry. (Source: John

Merriday H. Culpepper at the age of 17, enlisted in
Gainesville, Ga. on June 3, 1863 in Co. C, 24th Battalion, Georgia
Cavalry. With consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th
Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on Feb. 13, 1864. He was in Jackson
Hospital, Richmond, Va. from November 12 to December 1, 1864. Private
Merriday Culpepper was in Georgia on detail to obtain a horse when
General Lee surrendered. He was captured on May 8, 1865 at Athens, Ga.
and paroled the same day. Merriday H. Culpepper died in Hall County,
Ga. and is buried at Timberidge Baptist Church Cemetery there. He was
the older brother of John E. Culpepper and nephew of Caleb O. Latty,
