History
In the Tampa Bay Region of
Florida,
Polk County was formed in 1861 from
Brevard and Hillsborough
counties. Its county seat,
Bartow, is on
US-98/17 about 50 miles southwest of Orlando and 15 miles east of Tampa.
Polk is bordered by the counties of Sumter,
Lake, Osceola,
Highlands, Hardee,
Hillsborough
and Pasco.

Rory Culpepper.
Mr. Rory Culpepper of Lakeland died of lung failure Saturday (Oct. 9,
2004) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was 35. Born in Lakeland,
he was a lifelong resident. He was a delivery man for Country Hearth. He
also painted houses and detailed cars. Mr. Culpepper is survived by his
mother, Sylvia Simpson, Lakeland; stepfather, Henry Simpson, Lakeland;
father, Ulysses Culpepper, Lakeland; daughter, Kadaijah Simpson,
Lakeland; son, Rory Culpepper Jr., Lakeland; brothers,
Kerry Culpepper,
Gary Culpepper, both of Winter Haven; sisters, Yolanda McDougal, Yoranda
McDougal, both of Lakeland, Ebony Culpepper, Atlanta; grandmother,
Bessie Melton, Lakeland; companion, Shirley Brooks, Lakeland. Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Pilgrim Rest Freewill Baptist Church,
1047 N. Ohio Ave., Lakeland. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the
church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. H. W. Oldham Funeral Home. (Lakeland
