Lafayette County
History
In the North
Central/Suwannee River Region of Florida,
Lafayette County was formed in 1856 from
Madison County. In 1921, its southern half was split
off to form Dixie County. Lafayette's county seat, Mayo, is on
US-27 about 70 miles SSE of Tallahassee and 90 miles SSW of Jacksonville. Lafayette is bordered by the
counties of
Madison,
Suwannee, Gilchrist,
Dixie
and Taylor.
