History
In the Tampa Bay
Region of Florida,
Hillsborough County was formed in 1834 from
Alachua and Monroe counties.
In 1855, the southern part of Hillsborough became
Manatee County; in
1861, the eastern part was split off to help form
Polk County; and in
1911, the western part became
Pinellas County. Its county seat, Tampa,
is on I-75 at the terminus of I-4, and is about 80 miles southwest of Orlando.
Hillsborough is bordered by Tampa Bay and the counties of
Pasco, Polk,
Manatee and Pinellas.

Joe Ann Cliburn, 68,
a resident of Plant City, passed away February 24, 2004. She is survived
by her husband, James Cliburn Sr.; one son, James Cliburn Jr. and wife
Margaret; two daughters,
Judi Culpepper and husband Tim, and
Joanett Wiker and husband Shane; one sister, Iris Eady; brother-in-law,
Raymond Cliburn; three sisters-in-law, Hildred Cliburn, Betty Sue
Wiggins, and Fifi Boyette; ten grandchildren, Tony Roberts,
Khandice Culpepper, James Williams,
Amanda Culpepper, Tommy "Buddy"
Gilman III, Kristen Wiker, Austin Wiker, Jesse
Culpepper, Timothy Wiker, and Shaina Wiker; and one
great-grandchild, Hailey Culpepper;
and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Mrs. Cliburn retired from
the collection department at South Florida Baptist Hospital. Funeral
services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. from
Hopewell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Hopewell Memorial
Gardens. The family will receive friends for the visitation Friday
evening (tonight) from 6-8 p. m. at the funeral home. (Published in the

Mr. James H. Cliburn Sr.,
the retired owner of Cliburn's Floor Installation in Plant City, died of
cancer Wednesday (Nov. 17, 2004) in Plant City. He was 75. "He started
working with a floor covering company here in town and as soon as he got
good at it, he decided to go into business for himself, and he did a
very good job," said his sister, Betty Sue Wiggins of Plant City. "He
was a very smart man. He was a very humble man, a very loving man. His
family was definitely the most important thing to him. He was a good
honest man with good morals." Born in Westmoreland, Tenn., on Aug. 4,
1929, he was one of five children. He came to Plant City more than 60
years ago. Mr. Cliburn operated his business for more than 45 years
before retiring three years ago. He maintained an active role in his
children's lives when they were growing up, serving as a member and past
president of the PTA. at J.S. Robinson Elementary School in Plant City
when they were young. He also served as a president, umpire and coach of
Miss Softball America for many years, and as a Scout master for several
years. "What they really remember are the picnics that they went on, and
the camping trips that they took," Wiggins said. "His favorite thing was
to sit out on the front porch rocking in his rocking chair waving to all
the neighbors as they went by." He was an avid woodworker and made
cradles for all of his grandchildren when they were born. He also was
known for making Santa Clauses, sleighs and reindeer to decorate the
yard. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Cliburn was
preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Joe Ann Cliburn, in February.
In addition to his sister, he is survived by his son, James "Jimmy"
Cliburn Jr., Plant City; daughters, Judi
Culpepper, Joanett Wiker, both of Lakeland; brother, Raymond
Cliburn, Plant City; 10 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Hopewell Funeral Home,
Plant City. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home
