Hernando County
History
On the Gulf Coast
in the Tampa Bay Region of Florida,
Hernando County was formed in 1843 from Alachua
County, but was known as Benton County until 1850. In 1887, the northern third
of Hernando became Citrus County and the southern third
became Pasco
County. Hernando's county seat, Brooksville, is on
US-41 about 40 miles north of Tampa and 60 miles west of Orlando. Hernando is bordered by the
Gulf of Mexico and the counties of
Citrus,
Sumter and Pasco.
