Kern County

History

In California's Central Valley, Kern County was created in 1866 from Tulare and Los Angeles Counties in two roughly equal pieces. Its county seat, Bakersfield, is on CA-99, about 125 miles north of Los Angeles. Kern is bordered by the counties of Kings, Tulare, Inyo, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo.
