Morgan County
History
Morgan County was
formed in 1818 from land acquired from the Cherokee Indians by the Treaty of
Turkeytown. It lies in the northern section of the state, on the Tennessee River
and in the Interior Plateau Region. It is bordered by Limestone,
Madison,
Marshall, Cullman,
Winston, and Lawrence counties. The county seat was at
Somerville until 1891, at which time it was transferred to Decatur. Courthouse
fires occurred in 1926 and 1938. Other towns and communities include Hartselle,
Falkville, Priceville, Valhermoso Springs and Eva. Decatur is on I-65 and the
Tennessee River about 20 miles WSW of Huntsville and 80 miles north of
Birmingham.
