Unknown Culpepper Family
Selma, Dallas Co., AL
From: Nancy Pressley
Date: 20 Dec 1998
Addie Ryalls (who married my paternal grandfather's brother, Drewery "Dick"
Pressley) was born 1886 in Ozark, Dale Co., AL. A letter from the Methodist Children's
Home in Selma, AL dated 1920 lists her parents as Richard Wright Ryalls and Venchey
Parzada. (Addie's daughter's Bible names Addie's mother as Virgia Dillard.)
Addie was living with a Culpepper family in Selma, AL in 1905 when she married. Her
daughter-in-law ( who is still living) does not know of any relationship, but says that
Addie spoke often of the Culpeppers, and when Addie died, there were a few family photos
of a Culpepper family amongst her belongings. They are not identified, but Addie's
grandson remembers her identifying the pictures as members of the Culpepper family.
My primary goal is to determine who Addie's parents were, and what became of them, if
she was adopted, or simply lived with different families in the area.
Also, I would very much like to see these charming photos returned to the family to
whom they belong.

The only Culpepper family I can find in Selma during this time period is
the family of Julius J. Culpepper, who was from Thomas Co., GA, where he married Alice O.
before 1900. He was the son of the John Sampson Culpepper of Thomas Co. and was in Thomas
Co. in the 1900 census. Sometime thereafter he moved to Dallas Co., AL, and was there for
the 1910 census. By 1920 he had moved back to Thomas Co., GA. His children were Julius
Marvin (born 1904), Alva (1907), and Arlien (a son, 1916). I can't find anything at the
moment on a Burchor Culpepper. Don't know if this might be the family in the pictures, but
it is the only one I can find in census records in Dallas Co., AL.
